8 Days - Mitu Birding Trip

About this trip

Inírida is a region where Amazonian, orinoquense and guayanes source ecosystem meet, interweave by a water web, its physical, chemistry and biological characteristics answer to Andes sources guayanes shield and Amazonian plaint. This biodiversity of ecosystem generates and sustains a super diversity of species, Examples include Orinoco Piculet, Green-tailed Goldenthroat, Black-colalred Swallow, Citron-bellied Attila, Imeri Warbling-Antbird. So it is one of the most important places of conservation of the water area of Orinoco. Its overage temperature is between 24- 29 c in season of rain 26c, in dry time 34 is between 85 and 100 meters upon sea level.

Day 1: Arrival to Bogota

Day 2: Flight Bogota to Mitu / Comunidad mitusueño - Urania

In the morning its the fligth Bogota to Mitu with Satena airline about 1.5h.

The long covered bridge leading to the Urania community and the second growth patches around will be usually fairly productive.  

Birds of interest:Amazonian Tyrannulet, Black-chinned Antbird, Striped Woodcreeper, Versicolored Emerald, Black Caracara, Red-necked Woodpecker, Paradise Jacamar, Dark-billed Cuckoo, Bronzy Jacamar, Green Oropendola, Slate-colored Hawk and Red-fan Parrot. 

Night: Hotel los Paisas.

Day 3: COMUNIDAD PUEBLO NUEVO

One main trail and numerous side trails lead through tall forest that is a mixture of second growth and what is purportedly primary forest. The target birds species are Musician Wren, Ruddy SpinetailVariegated  and Cinereous, Tinamous, Mouse-colored Antshrike, Ringed Antpipit, Banded and Silvered Antbirds, Thrushlike AntpittaChestnut-belted Gnateater, Ocellated Woodcreeper, Wing-barred Piprites, Red-necked Woodpecker, Red-stained Woodpecker, Black-eared Fairy, Black-bellied Cuckoo, Buff-throated Foliage-Gleaner, Rufous-tailed Xenops and Lemon-chested Greenlet 

Day 4: SANTACRUZ- TAYAZU- PUENTE DE LATA

We starting to drive one hour from mitu, making the first stop on “Puente Lata” to look for the Fiery topaz hummingbird, around the bridge you can also see the Chestnut-capped Puffbird, exploring some trails later you can register species such as Black-bellied Thorntail , Gray-bellied Hawk, Pavonine Quetzal, Gray Antbird.

Day 5: CEIMA CACHIVERA /BOCATOMA

We will spent the day exploring an area with impressive rock outcrops. One of our main targets its the impressive Guianan Cock-of-the-Rock, here at its most westerly distribution. We will have some time to get some nice pictures before heading on along the trails.  We then climb onto the rocky outcrop for our picnic lunch and enjoy the marvelous views over the forest.  Another interesting birds are Purple- breasted Cotinga, Cliff Flycatcher, Yellow-bellied Dacnis, Lemon-chested Greenlet.

Day 6: CERRITO VERDE- BOCATOMA CRUCE

We make an early start to the Bocatoma trail where we manage to catch up with the cracking Grey-bellied Antbird; we all enjoy fantastic looks at this localized speciality. We will found Black-bellied Thorntail and a colony of Red-rumped Caciques

Day 7: SANTA MARTA- RÍO LIBERTAD - FLIGHT TO BOGOTA

This location its on the onother side to the Vaupes river, 25 minutes by boat to explorer the secondary forest, birds we found along this trail are: Grey-legged Tinamou, Orange-cheeked Parrot, Azure-naped Jay, Brown-banded Puffbird, Plumbeous Euphonia.

In the afternoon we have the fligth to Bogota.

Day 8: Flight home
